The collaborative Lincoln Literacy/SCC Refugee Welcome Class is a class for newly arrived refugees with zero to minimal English language knowledge and potentially limited literacy in their native languages. This 10-hour weekly course assists participants in recognizing the alphabet and numbers as used in the U.S., common and useful sight words that are helpful in daily life, and simple spoken language used when interacting with others in daily life, school, and work. Students remain in the course for one month to prepare for inclusion in general English language classes.
